What is Numeracy?

Mathematical literacy (aka Numeracy) is an individual’s capacity to identify and understand the role that mathematics plays in the world, to make well-founded judgements and to use and engage with mathematics in ways that meet the needs of that individual’s life as a constructive, concerned and reflective citizen”. (PISA)

Numeracy is a life skill. Being numerate goes beyond simply 'doing sums'; it means having the confidence and competence to use numbers and think mathematically in everyday life...
(National Numeracy)

The 'Maths is...' Jugglers texts teaches students the mathematical techniques and then gives them interesting problems and puzzles applicable to their everyday life that use these techniques, which makes the work fun to do and develops competence and self-confidence.

When I decided to write a new type of maths book, to deliver the National Curriculum, I wanted it to bridge mathematical knowledge in the classroom and its application to the real world. The exercises in my books are rigorous, but they’re presented as interesting problems and puzzles. Kids just love them. Each year’s work is delivered in topics and both explanations and examples are simple and clear.

The Y7 and Y8 students I worked with loved it. Motivation soared, especially when students could work on challenging problems in class and at home, in their own time. Teachers enjoyed the lessons, parents and inspectors were delighted, and exam results improved. In fact, students raced through the first editions, giving me fantastic feedback and insight, which resulted in the
second editions shortly after, which gave them another hundred challenging problems.

Y7 Headbanger Numeracy

In Year 7, students do a Section on the 24 hour clock. The first short exercise is on converting between times on a standard clock and a digital clock.
The second short exercise is called 'digital times in action', in which they work out the length of a TV programmes given the start and finish times, and similar problems. Straightforward problems, which is revision of what they did in KS2, but with enough information to teach in case it was missed.

Then they get to work/play with these problems and they love to respond to the challenge.
