then students will be MOTIVATED and DO WELL.

The EXTRA course:

  •  has been specially written for low attainers.
  •  follows a  logical development of mathematical ideas from L3 to L6.
  •  has lots of EXTRA practice on all techniques.
  •  progresses up through the levels as students work through each topic.
  •  has a Contents and Levels Chart at the start of each topic.

Each student:

  • takes responsibility for their own learning.
  • can decide how much practice (s)he need to do for each technique.
  • should mark their own work and seek help if there is anything that they do not understand or cannot get right.
  • can try Star Challenges when (s)he feels ready for them.

Each teacher:

  • gives the students a set time to work on the topic (3-4 weeks).
  • help students decide where to start in each topic.
  • should help/teach individual/groups of students as is required.

I firmly believes that all students can tackle Levels 3-6 in the National Curriculum for Mathematics. However, some students need:

  • more time to get to grips with the ideas and techniques involved.
  • lots of EXTRA practice.
  • one idea at a time introduced step-by step.
  • to meet ideas and techniques over and over again.
  • to work in a variety of interesting ways.
